1. Luton is the highest climbing university in England, according to the latest Good University Guide, published by the Sunday Times (September 2002). Luton jumped a massive 25 places up the table, from 102nd to 77th position (out of 123 institutions).
2. In fact, Luton continues to climb all the national newspapers league tables, appearing in The Times (May 2002) in 72nd position – a leap of 21 places in just three years.
3. We have moved up 20 places in just one year to 73rd position in the Financial Times table (May 2002). The FT described Luton as a long term improver which has confounded its critics. The newspaper states: [Luton] is very well placed to be a centre of excellence in the government’s attempts to widen access to university for students from poorer backgrounds. Luton, already an outstanding performer, could well benefit financially from its record under reforms currently being examined by the government.
4. Luton appeared in the most recent Telegraph league table in 67th position (a rise of 16 places in two years), and came straight in at 69th position in The Guardian’s table (2001).
5. The University is among the best universities for graduate employment, appearing top of the UK table, according to The Times newspaper, in both April 2001 and May 2002.
6. We have been awarded six excellent teaching scores in a row by the Governments watchdog, the Quality Assurance Agency. And the most recent QAA audit report (May 2002) acknowledges our strong record of achievement in QAA subject reviews.
7. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, we scored a high 4 in one of our newest areas – Tourism. We also scored well in subjects such as History, Media, Business and Management and Sport. In fact, The Guardian described Luton as one of the most improved institutions.
8. We have invested more than £60m in resources and facilities since 1993 and are due to invest several more millions in a brand new building to house Creative Arts. Next year, we begin building a new £3m Student Plaza to enhance the students social and cultural experience at Luton.
9. We have more than 12,400 students and 1,000 staff. Some 10,800 students are studying at undergraduate degree level, with 1,800 more studying for other awards, including postgraduate and professional training.
10. Nearly one-third of our students are from outside the UK – almost double the national average for international recruitment to a British university. That places us in the top 17 (out of more than 100 universities in the UK), according to Government figures.
11. We also have one of the most diverse student populations in the country, which includes the fact that 45 per cent of our students are aged over 24, and 30 per cent of our students are from ethnic minority groups.
