1. Luton is the highest climbing university in England, according to the latest ‘Good University Guide’, published by the Sunday Times (September 2002). Luton jumped a massive 25 places up the table, from 102nd to 77th position (out of 123 institutions).

2. In fact, Luton continues to climb all the national newspapers’ league tables, appearing in The Times (May 2002) in 72nd position – a leap of 21 places in just three years.

3. We have moved up 20 places in just one year to 73rd position in the Financial Times table (May 2002). The FT described Luton as “a long term improver” which has “confounded its critics”. The newspaper states: “[Luton] is very well placed to be a centre of excellence in the government’s attempts to widen access to university for students from poorer backgrounds. Luton, already an outstanding performer, could well benefit financially from its record under reforms currently being examined by the government.”
